Sterling Silver: Sterling Silver is usually alloyed with copper to
enhance its durability and prevent damage to the metal. Typically, sterling
silver consists of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent other metals (often
copper). Over time oxidation occurs and the piece becomes dark (tarnished).
You can prevent tarnishing by storing your pieces in cloth pouches, small bags,
or in separate compartments in your jewelry box. This will reduce the likelihood
of scratches. If your pieces become tarnished, use a silver cleaner to clean
them, but be careful not to have the cleaner contact pearls or other gemstones.
Natural Gemstones (Turquoise, Quartz, Agate, Tourmaline,
Jade, Malachite, Jasper, Garnets, etc): Most gemstones are somewhat soft and will scratch or crack easily.
Avoid dropping your pieces, and do not use commercial jewelry cleaner or
ultrasonic cleaners. Avoid contact with household chemicals, and avoid contact
with perfumes.
Pearls: Pearls are very soft and need special care. They should be
stored in a jewelry pouch or in a jewelry box, but not stored against other
pieces. Over time, the acids in your skin will cause the pearl to slowly lose
its luster. Avoid spraying perfume or hair spray on your pearls as it will also
destroy the luster. Do not use jewelry cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, or steam
cleaners on your pearls. To clean your pearls, simply wipe them with a soft
cloth after wearing them. You can also use a pearl-safe jewelry cleaner or
mild soap and water.
Crystals: Avoid getting lotions, powders, chlorine, or soaps on your
pieces. These will cut down on the brilliance of the gems. To clean transparent
crystalline gemstones, simply soak them in water with a touch of gentle soap or
ammonia. After brushing, simply rinse with lukewarm water and allow them to dry.
It is best to store your pieces individually, so they can't scratch each other.
